How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer for Your Big Day

Hi guys - Gez Here!

Congratulations on your engagement! Planning your wedding is an exciting journey, but let’s be honest — it can also feel a little overwhelming. One of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right wedding photographer to capture your big day.

After all, your photos will be your forever keepsake, a visual story of every meaningful glance, joyful laugh, and cherished moment.

So, how do you find the perfect photographer who fits your style, understands your vision, and makes you feel comfortable? Let’s dive in!

1. Understand Your Style

Before you even start searching for photographers, take some time to define what you want your wedding photos to look and feel like. Are you drawn to timeless and classic images, or do you love the look of candid, documentary-style photography? Perhaps you’re all about those dreamy, light-filled shots or bold, artistic compositions.

Ask yourself:

  • What emotions do I want my photos to convey?

  • Do I prefer posed portraits or spontaneous moments?

  • What kind of settings or backdrops do I envision?

Scroll through Pinterest, Instagram, or wedding blogs to gather inspiration. Once you have a clear idea of your preferred style, you’ll know what to look for in a photographer’s portfolio.

2. Research Photographers in Your Area

Now that you’ve got a sense of your style, it’s time to start the hunt! Search for photographers in your wedding location, like the Hunter Valley or Newcastle OR Mudgee wedding photographer, and explore their websites and social media profiles. Pay attention to:

  • Their Portfolio: Do their images reflect the style you love? Are their photos consistent across different weddings? How long have they been a professional for, and do they shoot solo, or as a collection.

  • Their Personality: Check out their "About Me" page or Instagram stories. Do they seem like someone you’d feel comfortable with?

  • Reviews and Testimonials: What are past clients saying? Did they feel supported and happy with the final results? Google reviews are so vital now - so get reading and help that be a guiding point in your search to find the best fit.

3. Narrow Down Your Options

Once you’ve identified a few photographers you love, reach out to them. This is your chance to ask questions and get to know them better. Here are some questions to consider:

  • Are they available on your wedding date?

  • What packages do they offer, and what’s included?

  • Have they shot at your venue before, or are they familiar with the area?

  • How do they handle unexpected challenges, like bad weather or a delayed timeline?

Pro Tip: Pay attention to how they respond to your inquiry. Are they friendly, professional, and enthusiastic? See if you can feel their passion about what they do, and if they’re generally excited about their job.

Communication is key to a great photographer-client relationship.

4. Prioritise Connection

Your wedding photographer will be by your side throughout one of the most emotional days of your life. It’s important to feel a connection with them. Do they put you at ease? Do you feel like they truly understand your vision and priorities? And it begins with a simple meet and greet.

I for one love to meet all my couples in person or online to basically, say hi and have a laugh. Connection is huge for both sides - don’t skip this important step.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I imagine spending hours with this person on my wedding day?

  • Do I feel confident in their ability to capture my story?

  • And go away and chat about it - there should never be any pressure to sign up there and then!

Remember, your photographer is more than just a vendor — they’re someone who will share and preserve your memories, have a ball with you on the day and take pride in their work for you to keep, forever.

5. Consider the Investment

Wedding photography is an investment, and it’s worth prioritising in your budget.

While it might be tempting to go with the cheapest option, keep in mind that your photos are one of the few things you’ll have to remember your wedding day.

Most photographers offer packages that include a range of options, like:

  • Full-day coverage or partial-day coverage

  • Engagement sessions

  • Fine art wedding albums

  • Additional photographers for larger weddings

Discuss your budget openly with potential photographers and see what’s possible. A great photographer will work with you to create a package that meets your needs.

6. Schedule an Engagement Session

Many photographers offer engagement sessions as part of their packages or as an add-on.

This is a great opportunity to get to know your photographer and get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. Plus, you’ll end up with beautiful photos to use for save-the-dates, invitations, or just because!

Not only this, but on the wedding day you’ll be so in sync with one another, time in front of the camera will truly make those candid, fun and real photos, come to life.

7. Ask About the Process

Each photographer has their own way of working, so it’s helpful to understand what to expect.

Ask about their process for:

  • Planning: Will they help you create a photography timeline for the day?

  • Editing: How long will it take to receive your photos?

  • Deliverables: How will your photos be delivered? Will you get an online gallery?

  • Who is editing my photos? Is it done by you, or edited externally?

This information will help you set expectations and ensure there are no surprises.

8. Trust Your Gut

At the end of the day, trust your instincts. If you feel excited about a photographer and can’t stop thinking about their work, they’re probably the right fit for you.
